The 26th Garva Rinpoche
Garva Awansanpo Rinpoche was born in 1967 in Wendu Village, Xunhua County, Qinghai Province. He is the nephew of the tenth Panchen Lama and the abbot of Wendu (or Vimsdo) Monastery, which is the ancestral monastery of Panchen Erdeni.

Garva means the leader of the union of state and religion. The first Garva is the nephew of the Sakya Pandit and also the younger brother of Phagspa, who was the first imperial master to Kublai Khan, the first emperor of Yuan Dynasty. Garva was the second imperial master.

The high monks of the Sakya Khon family have always succeeded the office of the Garva. The tenth Panchen Lama is also a member of the Sakya Khon family. If he was not recognized as the Panchen of Gelugpa, he would very likely end up with the title of Garva.

The tenth Panchen Lama appointed Garva Awansanpo Rinpoche as the 26th Garva of Wendu Monastery.

Dharma King Phagspa, the Yuan emperor's master, prophesied, "My dharma lineage shall pass to the kneecap. There, it will become a sacred ground to carry forward Buddha Dharma. My subordinate will present the lineage to my offspring of the Khon bloodline."

Visdom means kneecap. The 75th generation Lakangkanqin Ruzhu Gyaltso received the Sakya bloodline lineage and passed on to the offspring of Sakya Khon, Garva Awansanpo Rinpoche. This fulfilled Phagspa's prophecy to the letter.
